The international organization Avaaz has published a petition supporting the social media platform “Twitter”, titled "Don't Give in to Trump," after US President Donald Trump vowed that he might shut down the social media platform. This came was after the social media site tweeted to put a “Fact Check” on one of his tweets, this angered Trump, who is an active user of social networking sites and sees them, especially Twitter, as a way to convey his views to the voters outside the media, many of which he considered subjective and support his opponents the Democrats in their "war" against him.

Trump expressed his belief that these social sites outperform traditional media in terms of their impact on people's minds, but he admitted that he needed legal advice before making any decision in this regard.

Avaaz wrote in their letter to supporters:

Dear friends,

Trump is furious! Twitter just posted fact-checks on one of his tweets, and now Trump's threatening to shut them down! But we need Twitter to stand strong and keep fighting misinformation. They need our urgent support -- click to thank Twitter and its CEO, and tell them to keep going:

Trump is furious! Twitter just took our movement's advice and posted fact-checks on one of his tweets!

Trump has hit back by threatening to 'close' social media platforms that don't let him spread his lies without scrutiny, and now Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, is under massive pressure.

He'll either stand strong for integrity or back down -- and he's deciding right now.

Let's send a massive "thank you and keep going" to Jack Dorsey, encouraging him with a giant show of public support to go all-in on this direction. Avaaz has repeatedly met with top Twitter executives and we know they're listening -- let's appeal to them to stand strong:

Tell Twitter: "Thank you and stand strong!"

Twitter did almost exactly what we asked them to do -- they responded to a specific misleading tweet by posting fact-checked corrections. If this becomes Twitter's new policy, it's a HUGE win for the millions of Avaaz members who have campaigned for this!!

Now far-right supporters are bringing condemnation down on the heads of Twitter executives and staff, and they have the power of the US President behind them.

To keep up their courage, Dorsey and other Twitter staff need to know they're being cheered for doing the right thing, let's encourage them to stay strong and keep going:

For years, Avaaz has campaigned to fight disinformation, so that lies and trolls don’t destroy the very fabric of our democracies. Twitter has been too slow to move in this direction, and needs to go further and show everyone exposed to false information independent fact checks. But they've been brave and have done the right thing here, so let's appreciate and encourage it, and call on them to do more.
