A case of a Canadian woman was documented by researchers in the scientific journal Plastic Surgery Case Studies, where the Silicone implants in her breasts saved her life after the implants deflected an injury from a bullet shot at close range.
According to the investigations and findings by doctors, that the woman 30 years old, was walking in the street and felt heat and pain in the left chest, when she looked down, she found blood, and went to the emergency, where she was admitted to the trauma center, and undergone a CT scan, and the doctors found that the bullet entered her left breast and the implant deflected the trajectory of the bullet, and it entered the right breast implant deflating it and after the CT scan performed, the right implant was found in a “completely flipped position”, the woman has undergone an operation, where both implants were removed, and advised to delay of replantation for minimum 6 months’ time.
The doctors wrote in their report; “The benefits of breast augmentation are generally accepted to be on quality of life, as until recently implants had never been considered lifesaving”, they added; “Interestingly, despite the millions of women with breast implants and the thousands of women affected by gun violence worldwide, ruptured implants after firearm injury is a rarely reported phenomenon in the literature, with only several case reports having been described previously", noting that: “The silicone implant was likely responsible for deflecting the bullets trajectory and saving the women’s life".
No information were available about the circumstances of the shooting or the shooter’s identity, where investigations are still undergone.
Breast implants are medical devices that are used in breast reconstructive or augmentation surgeries for aesthetic reasons, and are implanted under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle to increase breast size (augmentation) or to rebuild breast tissue after mastectomy due to cancer or other damage to the breast (reconstruction). Breast implants are also used in revision surgeries, which correct or improve the result of an original surgery.
In 2018, the global market industry of implants was valued at 2.6 billion US dollars, and is forecasted to reach to 4.3 billion by 2026 according to fortune business insights, the implants used are either Silicone or saline, where the Silicone implants dominate this industry.
